The cost of a hair weave can range from $100 for a quick weave up to $2,000 for a celebrity quality weave. There are several variables that make up the price, such as full head or partial weave, sewn in or bonded, human hair or synthetic hair. Not only is there a cost for the initial hair weave process, you must also consider the cost of regular care and upkeep. In this article we will break down the costs by category, so that you can customize a weave hairstyle to fit your budget.

First ask yourself a couple of questions. Do you want to enhance your appearance for a specific event (a special date or concert) or for several weeks (summer vacation, end of the year holidays, or just until your hair grows out)? Second, do you want to leave everything to your hairstylist or are you willing to do a little of the legwork yourself? And finally, how much are you willing to spend?

Type of Hair / How Much Hair (30% of the Cost)

From businesswomen to Hollywood stars, customers are demanding higher quality from the products they purchase. The type of hair you purchase will depend on the desired style. Hair textures range from silky straight, relaxed, deep wave to curly. Hair quality can range from poor quality synthetic hair to human hair of excellent quality. Virgin Indian hair is the most popular type for extensions. With Indian hair the wefts are reinforced and sewn tightly to prevent the hair from shedding.

If you are getting a full-head braid and sew-in weave the average person uses about six ounces of hair. Most brands sell about four ounces in each package. Some people will use more some will use less. It is best to purchase two packs to ensure you have enough. You can always use the extra hair later. If you are using hair that is 18″ or longer may need an additional pack (sometimes the ends look thin with very long hair). If you are only getting a few tracks or you are bonding the hair, one pack is enough for four to five tracks.

Normally, hair length runs from 10″ (about $80 per bag) to 18″ (about $130 per bag). There are many less expensive brands available, but keep in mind that quality can sometimes decrease with the lower price tag.

Synthetic hair is very inexpensive compared to human hair and is often used for ponytails or hair buns. The costs can range from $5.00 to $20.00 per package depending on length. Heating appliances such as curling irons, flat irons or straightening combs should never be used on synthetic hair. While there are newer versions of synthetic hair from brands that claim to allow styling with lower temperatures of heating appliances, people should steer clear of such claims. The golden rule with synthetic hair is that heat is not an option. Synthetic hair is best for short term use. Typically when the synthetic hair is shaped its best not to change it, it is “What you see is what you get”.

Weaving vs. Bonding (50% of Cost)

Bonding is a popular temporary weaving method and a great way to add volume or vibrant streaks of color to your natural hair. Tracks of hair are glued to the roots of your own hair near the scalp with a special adhesive. To prevent damage to your natural hair, tracks should not be left in longer than a week or two and must be removed with a special solution. On average the cost to apply is $10-20 per track (cut and style may or may not be included in your price).

With weaving, the natural tresses are braided around the head in concentric circles. The braids are sewn down, then extensions or wefts are sewn to the braids. On average six to ten tracks are needed for a full head. This technique can be maintained for several weeks or months. This is a very time intensive process and pricing will vary greatly, but on average the costs range from $20-$60 per track.

In the conclusion below you will learn how to completely eliminate this cost.

Regular Maintenance and Tighten Up (20% of Total Cost)

It is important to think of your extensions as your own hair. The average hair weave–whether glued, bonded, or sewn into natural hair–lasts about two months. During this time, you must wash your weave as well as your natural hair. Weave hair is especially prone to becoming brittle and dry because it is not attached to the scalp and therefore does not receive any of the body’s natural oils. As with your natural hair, if you do not properly care for your weave it will quickly develop split ends and become frizzy and unmanageable. On average, regular maintenance and tightening will cost $20-$40 per track and must be done every two to four weeks.

Conclusion

Ultimately you can tailor your weave to fit any budget. You may choose to purchase your own hair and have it professionally applied and styled. You may want to learn to weave it yourself, and then have it cut and styled by a professional. Or you may have it weaved and styled professionally and choose to tighten it yourself.

Weaves provide a way for you to experiment with new styles and current hair trends without damaging your natural hair with excessive heat or chemicals. Weaves provide new looks which are usually easily cared for, but you must be aware that these procedures have a limited life cycle.

Remember HAIR DOES MATTER!

By: Elaine A.

About the Author:

We’ve all been there. Its three o’clock on a Saturday afternoon and you receive an invitation to a sold out concert that begins at seven-thirty that evening. You have the perfect outfit – the only problem: YOUR HAIR. It’s too late to get an appointment with your stylist, so what’s a girl to do? Do it yourself – it’s easier than you think.

Maybe you received a text from that guy you have a big crush on, asking if you want to meet him for a drink later that evening. Wouldn’t it be great if you could walk in rockin’ new hair extensions? You can, just do it yourself.

A hair weave is a non-invasive way to change your appearance, whether you are changing color, texture, length or fullness. However, it is imperative that you take precautions to minimize the risk of damaging your natural hair and scalp. It is completely possible to wear the latest celebrity styles without the damaging effects of chemicals and excessive heat.

I was terrified the first time I attempted weave my own hair (but I found an excellent step-by-step guide that I downloaded from the internet). My first concern was how would I look? Secondly, I wanted to protect and grow my own hair while wearing the weave. While it wasn’t perfect the first time, it turned out much better than I expected. The more I practiced, the better my result. Now my hair looks better than some of my friends who pay a professional stylist hundreds of dollars. If can do it…you can too.

In addition to learning to style your hair on the fly, imagine how much money you could save if you learned to service your own hair. At a cost of $20-$60 to tighten tracks every couple of weeks, you could actually save quite a bit of money.

The basic steps are simple:

1.	Select your style and purchase the hair that will give you the desired result. Human hair is always best.
2.	Prepare your hair by removing any existing tracks or braids.
3.	Shampoo, condition and dry your hair.
4.	Select a braiding pattern that will work with your desired style, working around any side part or bangs.
5.	Braid your hair and secure the braid to prevent unraveling.
6.	Finally, complete the track by attaching the hair to your braid.
7.	Once the hair is securely attached, go out and get a professional cut. If you attempt to cut your own hair, it will likely look unnatural.

If you perfect these tips your hair will last and be flawless! For those who already have a hair weave following are a few simple tips to keep your style looking fresh:

1.	Learn to brush your hair while holding the track close to the head with one hand. This prevents unnecessary pulling and tugging that will prematurely loosen the weave.
2.	To maintain the bounce and shine, shampoo each week (never go longer than two weeks) and avoid alcohol based hair care products.
3.	Thoroughly brush your hair before shampooing to remove all tangles, be sure to lift each track up and rinse out all residue buildup.
4.	At bedtime wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf. Cotton pillowcases and sheets may adversely affect the shine of your hair.

Finally, listed below are a few Do’s and Dont’s that will keep you on track:

•	DO – Purchase quality hair. If your hair does not “move” when you walk, you are either wearing synthetic hair (non-human) or you have not washed your hair in more than 10 days.

•	DON’T – Don’t use too much hair. In order to maintain a natural looking style, never use more than two bags of hair on your head at once.

•	DO – Cleanse regularly. If you want to keep the natural shine and bounce in your hair, shampoo and conditioner each week.

•	DON’T – Don’t braid your hair too tightly. Remember precise braiding makes the style last – not pulling hard from the scalp. Pulling too hard from the scalp only leads to pain and hair loss.

•	DO – Service your weave regularly. It is important to tighten and service your weave on a regular basis. This will prevent the wigish look that develops as the tracks in very front and very back begin to loosen.

•	DON’T – Please, say NO to glue. To protect and maintain your natural hair while wearing a weave, opt for a sewn in hair weave as opposed to bonding.

•	DO – Cover your tracks. Be sure to leave enough of your natural hair out in the crown of your head to blend with and cover your tracks. This creates a more natural look.

•	DON’T – Don’t explain. When someone gives you a compliment – just say THANKS. Please do not explain that it’s a weave.

A great new hairstyle will build your confidence and can literally change your life. Remember – Hair does matter!

By: Elaine A.

About the Author:

“Malaysian hair” is a term used for a rare type of human hair — from Malaysia, of course — that’s used for the finest extensions and weaves. With rich colors, a silky smooth texture and natural moisture, it’s got a well-deserved reputation as one of the highest grades of hair available.

But there’s a similar term that has a much more specific meaning. A “Malaysian hair weave” is a unique method of connecting hair extensions to the existing hair on someone’s scalp. Stylists use this method to avoid harming the surrounding that natural hair; the procedure involves very carefully braiding the weave into the natural hair without using glue or bonding it to the roots, and without braiding too tight, which can damage both roots and scalp.

Here’s how it’s done.

Don’t skimp on the hair. Unless you use the right type of hair, your weave is likely to fail. Even if you can’t afford the finest hair available, you’ll need to be sure to use real human hair and not synthetics. If you use the highest quality hair you can get your hands on, the weave will last a lot longer — not to mention look more natural and feel better.

Wash, then condition. Before you begin weaving, it’s absolutely imperative that you wash and condition the client’s existing hair. This is impossible to overdo; wash the hair and condition it at least three times each. And avoid using harsh chemicals — like styling product — for as long as possible before the weave is performed.

Be sure to moisturize. An unmoisturized scalp is likely to have broken hair or damaged roots. It’s important to begin moisturizing the scalp a few days before the weave is done. Make sure your client knows this.

By: D. Michael Kirby

About the Author:

There are many different types’ hair extensions available today, such as weaves, clip in, adhesive based fusion and metal tubing.

Clip in hair extensions are the least damaging and easiest to apply. Clip in hair extensions can give you more length, volume, texture and also allow you to add colour. You clip them into your own hair by separating your hair and starting at the nape of the neck. The amount of clips you use is up to you depending on the level of volume that you require. You simply clip the extensions to your own hair, working your way up your head. You open the clips and face them to the scalp then snap them into place.

For best results with clip in hair extensions you should style your own hair and the hair extensions separately. Clip in hair extensions can be worn all day and night, however you should take them out before sleeping. Clip in hair extensions are sometimes just worn for a night out and other people wear them everyday. This is because clip in hair extensions are versatile and quick to put in and take out. You don’t require a professional to fit them for you; you can do it yourself at home. There is no messing around with glue, meaning there is no damage to your hair. Clip in hair extensions are also reasonable in price. They are one of the most affordable forms of hair extensions but do not lack in quality because of this, most are made using 100% human hair. You can choose from lengths such as 11″ through to 28″.

Another form of hair extensions is bonding/sealing. This is when your real hair is sectioned and the extensions are plaited to your own hair and painted with a bonding solution, this seals the extension around the hair. This form of hair extension can last up to four months, after the four months the bond starts to loosen. This type of extension must be attached by a professional as they can be extremely difficult to do at home yourself. If done yourself at home the attachments can be hard to handle and you run the risk of ruining your hair as well as getting uneven length that will look un-professional.

One other method that you may or may not be aware of is when it comes to hair extensions is the fusion method. This is when 20-50 strands of human hair extensions have warm protein glue placed on them and a plastic template separates sections of the hair, keeping it away from the scalp. Each piece of hair extension is attached with glue to your natural hair and the attachment of hair to hair extension is pulled through a hole in the plastic template. You should roll the extensions and you’re natural hair together until a smooth bond is formed. This type of hair extension is a very long process and has to, with no exceptions be done on clean, washed hair, without the use of conditioner, otherwise the extensions won’t stick correctly. When the time comes to remove hair extensions that have been fused on you should always get it done at a salon as the bond between the hair and extension needs to be softened and cracked; this is done with fusion remover and specialist tools

The last form of extensions that I’m going to mention is Bonding Weaves. These are very similar to clip in extensions; you cut a length of human hair to fit your head shape. The extensions are then glued to your head just below the parting. You can get the glue to do this from most hair and wig stores. This form of hair extension is safe to do at home and the removal of these hair extensions can also be done at home as the remover can also be purchased from the same stores as the glue. You should make sure you have the remover before you put the extensions in so you can guarantee you can get them out when needed.

There are many other forms of hair extensions, but the ones mentioned above are the most common and the ones you are most likely to come across when searching for the right type for you.

By: Helen Cox

About the Author:
