Yes ladies, those wonderful hair product ads make you wonder why you would ever need to ask how to curl hair.

Well once you get the hang of it with a few tips, you will be on your way to achieving that professional look in no time. And of course you will need to practice, practice, practice. However there is no use in practicing the wrong technique, right?

How to Curl Hair – Step 1 Setting Up Your Hair

It is important before you begin to have a plan of attack. You need to setup your hair so you can easily work it as you create each curl. There are a couple of things you should do before you being:

Blow dry your hair. Do this by blow drying individual sections of you hair. Take a comb or brush and place it under medium sections of hair at a time, then point the blow dryer from above and slowly move the comb and dryer down the strand of hair. Repeat this for all sections of your hair, and you will have a good base to start form.

Divide and Conquer. If you don’t want to be getting into a tangle, you really need to make your hair manageable as you go. There are a number of ways to do this, but the easiest is to find the center of your hair on your scalp and use two large hair clips to pin your hair up on each side. Basically you are creating a massive part in the middle of your hair and putting the two sides up.

Shiny Baby. If you want the professional look, it is important to get your hair looking shiny. You local stylist can help you choose the best hair products for this look, if you don’t already have fabulous hair.

In the next section we will discuss the basic process.

How to Curl Hair – Step 2 Basic Process

In step 2, we discuss the basic process on how to curl hair:

1. With your hair pinned up as describe in step 1, take an inch of your hair at a time to form a flat strand

2. Hold your hair at the end of that strand

3. Place the styler at the other end of the strand (end closest to your head)

4. Once closed on your hair rotate and slowly glide out towards the ends

5. You are rotating the styler approximately 180 degrees, not a full turn or else you wont be able to glide the styler

6. Then slowly glide the styler out towards the end of the strand while the styler is still rotated

7. Repeat until all sections of your hair are wonderfully curled

In the section we will conclude by discussing some tips and advanced techniques.

How to Curl Hair – Step 3 Tips & Techniques

Here are some tips and advanced techniques you might find useful:

Tips
* The slower glide the tighter the curl will be

* With a good styler you should only have to repeat the glide on the one train once or twice

* In fact you don’t want to continually repeat the process on a single strand as you can damage your hair due to excessive heat

* If you don’t get the process exactly right you are best to let that strand of hair cool down for a couple of minutes before repeating the process again

* Again practice practice practice, it will take you 2 to 3 goes before your curls actually start to look good – oh well more time in front of the mirror

Advanced Technique

* If you are after a more natural look for your curls, it is important when rotating the styler that you reverse the curl action. So rather than twisting clockwise, twist it anti-clockwise. By mixing it up you will be achieving that natural look in no time

* If you are after a more modern look for curls, one of the options is to start the curl half way down the strand of hair, rather than curling the whole strand.

* Keeping the curl in tact – an easy way to keep those lovely looking curls in place for longer is to place a small amount of hair wax through each section of curls. Do this, by placing a small amount of wax on the end of your fingers and lightly gliding your fingers through the curl, trying not to over handle the curl as you go.

Hope you have enjoyed the ezine.

By: Joel Bowerman

About the Author:
