Perhaps the best way to change your hairstyle, in case you have straight hair, is to try wavy or curly hairstyles. But, if you are trying to make straight hair curly and wavy then you should stay away from perms as they may damage your hair and wont allow you to get straight hair till the perms grow out. There are nonetheless many other methods that you can use to get curly or wavy hair and here are a few of them:

#1) You can braid your hair after washing it. Do this to wet hair to get tighter waves. Sleep with braided hair and keep them like that till you are ready to leave for the day. Use hairspray before removing the braids to ensure that your hair remains wavy.

#2) Put your hair in a bun and leave for half a day. You can also use a blow dryer for a quicker solution. After washing your hair, put it in a bun and blow dry it using the cool or medium setting. You can leave it in a bun then for getting better defined waves or let it down to get a subtle wavy style.

#3) You can go to sleep with fabric rollers in your hair. Wear a hair cap to help keep it tight. The damper your hair is when you go to bed, the curlier it will be the next morning. This is good if you would rather sleep than style your hair in the morning.

#4) You can also use a flat iron. Just twist your wrist towards your head after clamping down on a part of your hair and hold the position as you glide down the lock of hair.

#5) A curling iron with detachable barrels in varying diameters can also help you get curls of different sizes. This will make your hair seem naturally curly. You can also use a spiral curling iron to get ribbon curls.

By: Jack Cardell

About the Author:

If you have thick hair, consider yourself lucky compared to people who wish to have more hair on their head. People simply have dissimilar tastes when it comes to hair volume. Those who have thinner hair volume like it thicker, those who have thicker hair want it thinner. If you are one of the latter, your best friend will be a hair thinning shear to help you solve your problem.

Here are some few advices to keep in mind when using thinning shears though. Some people may doubt the effectiveness of thinning shears and feel that it might take most of their time using it but it actually does the opposite. It is so simple to use; many people just get the wrong idea from people who are novice when it comes to the device. Hair thinning shears have teeth-like blades that remove tangles with just a single stroke. The thinness you want can be reached without compromising your hairstyle with the use of these special shears.

If your hair is long and thick, you may want to comb it first before running the shears into your hair. You can also work in sections to achieve best results. You slide the open hair thinning shears to the hair starting 1/3 to 1/2 of the way along the length of the scalp. Now make a single snip then open and remove the shears. Use a comb to pass through the section where the hair has been cut. Move on to the next part until you have completely finished thinning your hair. If you think you need to cut a little on an area you can make a second pass but this time start from 1/3 from above the ends of the hair. This will taper the fullness of the hair without ruining your hairstyle. Always perform the snipping equally or in uniform. You can only make additional cuts if you are sure that you need them. Do not remove too much hair or it will end up looking stringy.

You will only want to use hair thinning shears in every 3rd haircut/trimming. If you go beyond the recommended timing, you will remove too much hair and your hair will end up too thin. After your first thinning, you may want to trim your hair at the upper portion the second time around since the previous cut was done at the lower portion of your hair. This technique of using thinning shears is advisable to those who have straight or wavy hairs. If your hair is curly, you can add another thinning step for the third time at the middle length to achieve the volume you want and prevent the triangular shape of you hair or what they call the "Christmas Tree" style.

An important reminder to take note is to open the shears after you make the snip. Try to pull the shear with the blades closed away from the hair. Take a section of hair and pin it on the top and thin starting from the hair below to avoid a poky hairstyle. If you want bangs, use the shears about 1/2 ways down the base of the hair. Using thinning shears is simple and produces a chic look in a snap.

By: Kristy Carlson

About the Author:

There are many things that can effect your hair growth. Your Diet, your health, If you smoke or drink and even the environment can have a direct effect on it. If you follow these tips you will increase your growth and if you do it quickly enough you can bring any loss to a halt.

Diet has a big effect for a few simple reasons. Your hair is made from protein or keratin to be exact and if you eat junk food or have a poor diet it is going to suffer. You will see it become dull and lifeless and maybe even start to thin if you do not look after it. It is not a coincidence that people who eat junk food and lead unhealthy lifestyles have dull lifeless hair and suffer premature hair loss.

Another sure sign that your hair is not getting the proteins and food it needs to grow can be seen in your nails. Your nails grow from the same proteins and if your nails are brittle or break easily then you can be sure you have a problem with your hair as well.

What you should eat.

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables will give you almost all the proteins vitamins and minerals you need. You should also include fish in your diet as well, or if not fish at least take some supplements that contain omega 3 fatty acids.

By including these as a staple of your diet your hair will improve enormously and it will grow as fast as it can. It also has the added advantage of acting to stop non-DHT hair loss as well.

Environment.

If you live or work in a stressful environment this can lead to sudden and drastic hair loss. If you are suffering from stress you should take action to reduce it by exercising or just relaxing. Once the stress is gone your hair will grow back and with the help of a good diet will grow faster and as well as before.

Smoking.

There is much debate around this, but in a recent medical study of a group of men it was reported that the smokers had massively increased hair loss compared to non smokers and it was suggested this was caused by poor circulation in the scalp caused by smoking. smoking is generally bad for your health and should be avoided.

Hair growth pills.

These contain vitamins, proteins, herbs and minerals for your head and hair. They act to increase hair growth naturally and stop any loss by inhibiting DHT which is the major cause of thinning hair.

By: David St Jones

About the Author:

It is almost an incontestable fact that African Americans are among the most artistically inclined societies in the world; and it is therefore no wonder that their there is such a great variety of African American hairstyles - seeing that a 'hairstyle' is first and foremost a work of art. Another possible explanation as to why there are so many African-American hairstyles has to be the fact that there are so many 'sub-cultures' within the African American society, with almost each of these sub-cultures having a unique hairstyle for identification purposes among its members, and typically with each sub-cultures hairstyle being one of the features that add up to the member's 'sense of belonging' in the group.

While going into naming and describing each of the numerous African-American hairstyles would be a huge task enough to make a several thousand page thesis, a number of things can be said in general about the African American hairstyles.

One is that, as would be expected, there seems to be a greater variety of such African-American hairstyles for women that there are for men - though the African-American men are not altogether bereft of 'outstanding' hairstyles. One of the most remarkable of these African American hairstyles of men (which by and large remained an African American hairstyle because other hair types could simply not accommodate it) is the so-called 'Afro' hairstyle that rocked most of the 70s and 80s: where the hair was let to grow tall and thick (but not long enough to fall over), then combed thoroughly and (vertically) straight to come up with a very outstanding look on the part of the wearer that worked wonders; especially when worn with the 'belly bottom' trousers of that age when the 'Afro' ruled African American hairstyle circles. And since hairstyle fashion trends go in cycles, it is not surprising that the 'Afro' is increasingly making a comeback though to be sure, nowadays, it is the ultra-stylishly minded individual who doesn't mind being labeled 'eccentric' who is likely to be seen wearing an 'Afro' today.

Among the women in the African-American society, braids (and the whole range of braided hairstyles) are extremely popular - with some of these even finding acceptance among men who 'are in touch with their feminine side.' The black hair is, of course, easily workable into braids - which is why the braided look has found little usage outside the African American society in the USA.

Closely related to the braids are the African-American hairstyles based on weaves - since the strength of the African American hair makes it possible to weave it into various shapes. Unlike the braids, though, the weaves mainly remain popular among the women, with only the occasional man who is not afraid to 'stand out' sporting one or another variety of the weave.

Dreadlocks (and associated hairstyles) are another popular variety of African American hairstyles, especially among the subscribers of the Rastafarian faith ands its sympathizers; who were for quite a good number of years almost in a majority in the African American society, before the hip-hop revolution of recent years which has seen the numbers even out between those who are sympathetic to the Rastafarian cause and those who prefer the much more easy-going approach to life epitomized by the hip hop subculture.

By: Jamie Gram

About the Author:

Hair grows about a 1/2 inch per month. Hair health, genetics and your diet play a huge role in how fast your grows, but there are things you can do to move hair growth along at a faster rate.

Nutrients are fed to the hair through the hair follicle which also contains an oil gland to keep hair shiny and a tiny muscle that keeps the hair attached. When the hair finally appears it is not alive and is composed of fibers made of 91 percent protein. You need a healthy diet which is rich in B vitamins, biotin, and amino acids which are the building blocks of protein, and herbal compounds that stimulate the scalp. So, if you want to grow your hair fast for starters you need;

--A shampoo rich in amino acids (proteins) and herbs that stimulate the scalp
--Flaxseed Oil, Vitamin A and Zinc and Copper contribute to healthy hair growth
--Don't brush your hair when it is wet
--Do a scalp massage to stimulate circulation
--Quit smoking, it can cause hair loss
--Try to limit hair dyes & chemicals, high heat from hair dryers, heated rollers or flat irons
--Wear a hat if you will be in the sun
--Be patient

Although hair does not perform any function as say a kidney or eyesight would, as a society an abundance of hair for a woman equals femininity and for men it equals masculinity. You could shave off all your hair or lose it and you would not die because of it, but in our culture, we want gorgeous hair. We are also impatient and want instant results. Although we can not get instant results growing hair, unless you get hair extensions; we can provide our hair and scalp with optimal growing conditions. Much like a baby in the womb or a vegetable garden growing under a hot house. If they are both given the nutrients they need, the optimal environment will get things going a little faster.

By: R. T.

Extensions are made of artificial or real hair that is seamlessly woven, glued, or clipped into your own hair. The concept has been around for a long time, but now, with new technologies, it's often impossible to tell.

Extensions come in all shapes, sizes, and budgets. Clip-ons are the easiest because you don't have to go back to the beauty parlor when your natural hair grows. Woven or glued extensions - which are done at the salon - last between 2 to 6 months.

Weaving

Weaving is a two-part process. First, the stylist weaves a series of threads into your own hair, using underneath sections so the work won't show. She then uses that weave as a base upon which she will attach the hairpiece, or weft (a curtain of hair, attached at the top and free-flowing at the bottom).

Non-glue extensions

Here's where the high-tech comes in. You can have hair strands attached to your own hair using micro-cylinders. Though time-consuming to apply, they will not cause damage. And when you want them out, your stylist can remove them quickly and easily.

Even more 22nd century, choosing Microchet extensions means you can have hair placed in spots that are thinning! It uses a patented threading technique that is considered gentle and painless.

If you don't mind a 3-7 day install, and you have a stylist you trust, you might want to go for a process called Invisible Strands. Application takes this long because they put the extension on just one strand at a time. But it can last much longer than the other techniques.

Glue-based extensions

Yep, some techniques glue the hair, strand by strand, directly to your scalp. Glue-based extensions are also used to attach new hair to your already existing hair, using a strong, protein-based bond. Your stylist will use a fairly low temperature and the process will not harm hair or scalp.

Before going in for extensions, ask the salon what type of materials they use. And ask about prices - they vary widely. Best to go to a salon you already know, or one that a friend has used successfully for her own extensions. Don't be afraid to ask questions before and during the process.

New Hair Care

Gentleness is the word. You can comb, brush, style, swim, ride around in a convertible - anything you'd do normally. But be patient when combing out tangles, and don't pull too tightly when styling. Also, experts do not recommend trying to color your extensions. The fabric or hair has already gone through a lot of chemical processes, and at-home coloring could damage it. If you feel the extension getting loose after a few weeks, that's normal - it just means your hair has grown enough that you need to go back to the stylist.

Washing your hair should be done at least every 2 to 3 days, using a gentle shampoo. Take the time to make sure your entire scalp gets washed. Then use a heavy-duty conditioner. Extensions don't receive the natural oil that your real hair gets.

Clip-on hair

The easiest and least expensive of all techniques, this is also the most tell-tale. Why? Because it's difficult to match your existing hair color. Some women experience lightening of their natural hair color in the summer. And if you have chemically colored hair, you may see it fade over the course of its 4 to 6 week life-span. So for clip-ons, having a wardrobe of 2 to 3 colors to choose from, is the wise way to go.

As with salon applied extensions, we recommend getting your clip-ons from a professional who can suggest matches to your color and your hair texture. Although - who knows - you might just want a pony tail or pink "streak" for fun. Your local pharmacy or beauty store will have them, and the cost is minimal.

Synthetic versus Human Hair

Experts recommend human hair as perhaps the most natural-looking and longer-lasting. But if your budget says no thanks, there's a lot of great synthetic hair on the market. Woven expertly into your own hair, it may be surprisingly natural-looking.

We're living in an age when you can literally choose your hair. If you've always wanted long, luscious tresses that bounce romantically when you run, you can have them. First timers have a tendency to go overboard, though. Take your lifestyle into account when choosing extensions: Do you have time to care for long hair? If it's short bed-head hair you want, can you wield a blow dryer to get that style after you leave the salon?

How to Thicken Your Hair Without Extensions

If you have thin hair and don't have the time or resources for extensions, there's still plenty you can do to get bigger hair. Some ideas are as easy as switching to a different kind of hairbrush, or making sure your diet is hair-friendly.

New brands, adhesives, and clip-on styles are coming out all the time. Synthetic hair or real hair comes in every style, color, and price. You can change your look to suit your mood. And best of all, the outer you can now truly reflect who you are inside.

By: Suzann Kale

About the Author:

Braid extensions can actually be beneficial to strong hair growth if they are placed in and taken care of correctly. They allow the natural hair to rest from a lot of everyday manipulation that comes with styling, using heat products, combing and brushing. However, if they are not entered in correctly or taken care of correctly, they can actually cause hair damage and extreme breakage. Here are some tips on avoiding hair damage while wearing braid extensions:

1.	Do not add extensions to your hair if you added a chemical relaxer in less than 2 weeks- After a chemical relaxer is applied to the hair, the change in the hair structure can leave it vulnerable to dryness and breakage. The extensions call for a certain amount of tension on your own hair. The tension from apply the extensions on fresh chemically relaxed hair can cause extreme breakage, therefore, is not recommended.

2.	Have an experienced beautician assess your own hair- Yes you may want to save money if someone you know can personally add the extensions in for you, but an experienced beautician will let you know if your own hair is healthy enough to wear braids. An experience beautician will look for dryness, breakage, severe dandruff, and even head lice. Should the client have any of the latter, the beautician will recommend that they have their condition treated before extensions are added in.

3.	Do not have the extensions braided in too tightly- Your own hair will need room to grow through the extensions. If they are placed in too tightly, your own hair has no place to go and when it comes time to take the extensions out, you will have a significant amount of breakage. This is especially true if hair is braided too tightly around the edges or temple areas. This can cause permanent hair loss. If you feel the beautician is breaking too tight along the hair line and temple area, please speak up and let them know.

4.	Do not wrap extensions up too tightly with hair fasteners- Some women like to where their extensions in a ponytail. While there is nothing wrong with that, having them fastened up too tightly with a rubber band or other fastener can cause the extensions to stretch on your own hair, thus putting it in a position to be pulled out.

5.	Use a leave in conditioner on your extensions- It is very easy for your own hair to become dry when added in with extension. Applying products like hair grease to them can cause build up and make it difficult to take them out. Use a leave in conditioner so that the conditioner will add moisture to your own hair.

6.	Do not leave extensions in any longer than 8 weeks- Some women can actually go 3 months with some braided styles, but anything longer than that is not recommended as leaving them in longer than that can cause them to lock with your own hair.

7.	Wear a satin scarf while sleeping or sleep on a satin pillowcase- This will prevent dryness and breakage to your own hair.

Yes, braid extensions are considered a "protective" hair style-a style that can protect your own hair from breakage that may come from everyday manipulations of the hair and scalp. If applied in correctly and taken care of correctly, you can avoid hair damage even while wearing braid extensions.

By: Kiandra Dixon

About the Author:

A Permanent wave is a service that creates permanent curl, waves, or body. To achieve this, hair is wound around small plastic curlers, called rods. Once every strand is rolled, locks are saturated with waving lotion. This lifts the individual tiles that comprise your hairs cuticle layer, seeps into the hair strand, and breaks down the bonds that give your hair its individual shape. This lotion is sometimes called "reducing" lotion because it actually reduces the interlocking ability of hairs bonds.

Following a perm, it takes up to 48 hours for your hair's keratin to completely re-bond and your cuticle layer to close. That's why you are not supposed to wash, wet style, or brush your hair during this period.

When the hair's bonds have been broken apart, the hair is then doused in neutralizer; this forces hair's bonds to re-form according to the configuration of the rods the hair is rolled on. This neutralizer is often called an oxidizing liquid because it contains either hydrogen peroxide or sodium bromate. These ingredients inject oxygen into the hair, which in turn combines with the hair's natural hydrogen molecules to form new hair bonds.

There are two types of permanent waves: alkaline and acid. Each type has its own pros and cons:

Alkaline permanent waves These are standard permanent waves. Their waving lotions use a strong, alkaline chemical called ammonium thioglycolate, hence their nickname "thio perms." They work quickly, give strong curl, and are great for hair that is resistant to permanent waves, such as coarse or Asian hair. The bad thing about alkaline perms is that they do not offer subtle, soft results, and can be very damaging. In addition, they are not recommended for those with artificial color in their hair or for people who have very dry or damaged locks.

Acid waves These are gentler than alkaline perms; their waving lotions use a kinder chemical called glyceryl monothyioglycylate. If you have fragile, colored, or damaged hair, acid waves are your perm. Unfortunately, acid perms are more likely to give subtle ripples, or lots of body, rather than firm, crisp curls. Note: Endothermic acid waves require an application of heat; exothermic acid waves don't. A combination of ammonia and ammonium thioglycolate is what gives a permanent wave its telltale odor.

Full perms

For a full perm, or standard perm, an alkaline or acid formula product can be used - it's the way hair is rolled that gives the service its name. The hair is sectioned in five forehead-to-neckline sections - the center section up top is rolled away from the face, while the rest of the hair is rolled under horizontally. Depending on the hair's length and the size of rods used, the resulting curls can be loose and jumbled, tight and kinky, or bigger up front and smaller toward the back.

Partial perms

If you're like me, hair on different parts of your head does different things. Perhaps the hair at the back of your head is curly, while all other strands are stick-straight. If you'd like the straight locks to match the curls, ask your stylist for a partial perm, also called a spot perm. As the name implies, the perm is performed only on specific areas - the remaining hair is left untreated.

Got a cowlick? When perming your hair, roll affected strands in the direction you want them to fall.

By: Robin Brain

About the Author:
