You'd be surprised what's in your kitchen cupboards that can increase the growth rate of your hair. In particular, tea (with caffeine) is not only great for drinking, but it's also been linked in research to contribute to hair growth. How is this possible? Well, the caffeine stimulates the hair follicles as well as block DHT (hormone responsible for hair loss and male pattern baldness). It also slows down the rate of hair fall as well as reduces shedding.

Other benefits include increase thickness, produces hair that is so lush and cotton soft.

Tea Rinse Recipes

Recipe to use after taking out a sew-in weave or braids:

4 cups of hot water, swish the tea bag around until the water turns color, let it sit and cool. Put on hair and let it sit for a few minutes and comb through hair. Results - easy detangling, less breakage, and less shedding.

Recipe for hair loss - mix black tea with a bit of lemon juice, apply to hair, massage into scalp, and follow up by shampooing.

Use tea as a final rinse after your weekly shampoo and conditioning regimen

Holistic recipe books recommend nettle tea as a rinse for your strands. Nettle tea although it doesn't have caffeine it is said to promote hair growth and strengthens your tresses. This is due to it's stimulating properties. Steep tea bags or put loose herbs in a pot of hot water, let it sit for more than two minutes, then infuse with essential oils such as peppermint and rosemary. Nettle can also be mixed with aloe vera and horsetail to create a homemade hair strengthener.

Nettle tea tonic for soft and glossy hair - nettles, quart of water, allow water to begin to simmer, add one handful of nettles, allow to the nettles to simmer in the water for at least 2 hours. Once mixture has cooled, strain, and put in a bottle. Use a scalp treatment and apply every other night. Be sure to make a fresh batch every three days or so as this does not have a long shelf life.

Recipe for Fine Hair - shampoo hair (make sure the hair and scalp are clean), apply a protein treatment, rinse with something that is moisturizing, gently squeeze excess water from hair, pour tea rinse on hair making sure to get your scalp, apply moisturizing conditioner, deep condition for 25-30 minutes, rinse the tea/conditioner combo out of hair, apply your leave-in and style as normal (roller set or another protective style)

Tips

If used more than once per week, you may experience dryness, be sure to rinse out the tea and always incorporate moisture into your regimen.

May experience better results using black or nettle tea

By: Antonina Geer

About the Author:

Vinay Gupta asked:

Hair loss can occur after pregnancy, major stress trauma or illnesses. There are some medicines as well which can cause hair loss. You can prevent this if you stop taking those medicines, but after consulting a doctor. Medicines that can cause this include blood thinners, also called anticoagulants, medicines for gout problems, medicines used in chemotherapy for cancer, excessive intake of vitamin A, birth control pills & even certain antidepressants. Certain infections like fungal infections of the scalp can also cause hair loss. These are easily treated with some antifungal medicines. Lastly, hair loss may also occur as part of a disease that you may be suffering, such as diabetes. It is important to find the cause so that it can be treated since hair loss is usually an early sign of a disease. Depending on your type of hair loss, treatments are available. If a medicine is causing your hair loss, your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medicine. Recognizing and treating an infection may help stop the hair loss. Correcting a hormone imbalance may prevent further hair loss.

Medicines may also help slow or prevent the development of common baldness. One medicine, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Both men and women can use it. Another medicine, finasteride (brand name: Propecia) is available with a prescription. It comes in pills and is only for men. It may take up to 6 months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working.

If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.

Male pattern baldness (i.e. receding hairline and a bald patch developing), in men, is linked to me male hormones, androgens. In women, it is unclear whether hormones do play a part. It is often an inherited tendency, especially in women. The most practical solution to in male pattern hair loss is to take the oral contraceptive pill, Dianette, which blocks the male hormones (androgens) and so can help prevent further hair loss. If you cannot take the pill for some reason (e.g. because you have had a thrombosis) or you prefer not to, you could try minoxidil (Regaine) lotion, available over the counter. You have to keep using it or any hair regrowth tends to fall out again, which can prove very expensive. If you are approaching the menopause then you may want to consider HRT which may halt the process and restore some hair thickness. A blood test will not tell you much but can let you know whether you are approaching the menopause despite regular periods. If no particular cause is found, advice from a skilled hairdresser is best. There are many commercial sources of help with hair loss problems but you need to be a little sceptical and careful before spending lots of money on untested or unproven wonder cures.

Create a video blog

Robert Campanile asked:

Some men never go "bald" but everyone's hair thins out over the years. The term androgenetic refers to the fact that common balding requires both male hormones (androgens) and a genetic tendency to lose hair. Because there are many genes involved, however, you can't look at your parents and know how much hair you will lose or how fast you will lose it. In particular, the idea that hair loss is passed down from the mother's side of the family is folklore, not fact.

Hair loss may be hereditary or because of increasing air and water pollution. There is no single reason for this problem. Mostly hair loss or baldness is not associated with systemic or internal disease, nor is poor diet a frequent factor. Thyroid disease can cause hair loss, but thyroid tests on people who have ordinary hair loss are usually normal. Although many medications list "hair loss" among their potential side effects, drugs are also not overall common causes of thinning or lost hair. On the other hand, with cancer treatments and immune suppression medications, hair loss is not uncommon.

Many conditioners, shampoos, vitamins, and other products, as well as procedures involving lasers and heat, claim to help hair grow in unspecified ways. These are harmless but useless and not worth the investment. To slow down hair loss, there are just two medically proven options:

Baldness generally involves hair loss on head where it often grows. There are different stages in hair loss it starts from hair thinning and this condition called androgenic alopecia or "male pattern baldness" that occurs in adult male humans and other species. The amount and patterns of baldness can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (androgenic alopecia, also called androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica), alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, and alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body.

There are various ways to camouflage hair that has already gone. These include hairpieces or hair-weaving processes. Toupees require tape or other ways to keep them from sliding off, and they also stretch and oxidize. Hair weaves loosen and need periodic restyling.Techniques for performing surgical procedures like scalp reduction and hair transplants have improved over the years, producing better, more natural results. Transplant surgeons do their best to use hair that is not genetically programmed to fall out later. Taking Propecia after a transplant also helps to retain hair. Shaving the scalp has been fashionable and is an option other than trying to grow more hair.

There is one useful way to classify hair loss is by whether the loss is localized and patchy, or whether it affects large areas or the whole scalp.

Caffeinated Content

Juliet Cohen asked:

Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. The primary cause of hair loss is genetics. That's inherited or androgenic hair loss and makes up the majority. It is caused by increased sensitivity to male sex hormones in certain parts of the scalp, and is passed on from generation to generation. Some men have areas on the scalp that are very sensitive to the male sex hormones that circulate in men's blood. The hormones make the hair follicles - from which hair grows - shrink. In men who develop male pattern baldness the hair loss may begin any time after puberty when blood levels of androgens rise. The first change is usually recession in the temporal areas, which is seen in 96 percent of mature Caucasian males, including those men not destined to progress to further hair loss.

Male pattern baldness is an inherited condition and the gene can be inherited from either the mother or father's side. Thyroid disease can cause hair loss, but thyroid tests on people who have ordinary hair loss are usually normal. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hair line and baldness on the top of the head. Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners, medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants. Hair loss remedies have advanced dramatically over the past ten years.

Causes of Male hair loss:

Male pattern hair loss is caused by sensitivity to male sex hormones. Stress can cause hair loss is some people. Male pattern baldness is passed on from generation to generation.

Symptoms of Male hair loss:

1. Most people notice hair loss when looking at themselves in a mirror.

2. You may also find many hairs on your pillow in the morning or in your hairbrush or comb.

3. A decrease in the size of her ponytail.

Treatment of Male hair loss:

Hair loss due to infection may require oral antibiotics or antifungals. Alopecia areata can be treated with injections of steroids such as triamcinolone into the area. For all of the causes, early treatment works the best. One medicine, minoxidil, is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Both men and women can use it. Another medicine, finasteride is available with a prescription. If adequate treatment is not available for your type of hair loss, you may consider trying different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement.

Create a video blog
